Dryers

Since dryers affect your clothes' appearance and life span, it’s important to buy a dryer that fits your wardrobe. All dryers, whether gas or electric, spin clothes around and blow hot air on them. While gas dryers usually cost more initially, they tend to be more energy-efficient than electric. One of your biggest concerns should be the capacity of the dryer. Don’t assume that an extra large dryer means the same for every model, because each manufacturer has its own definition of capacity. Be sure your capacity for your dryer is compatible with that of your washer. The general rule of thumb is to have about twice as much capacity in the dryer than in the washer. So if you buy a 3.3 or 3.5 cu. ft. washer, you will need a 7 cu. ft. dryer.

All dryers tend to do an acceptable job of drying clothes, what makes a dryer model different is its cost of operation and selection of features. Some important features to look for are digital, dial or push-button controls; temperature settings for different fabrics; a cool-down cycle which helps prevent wrinkling; noise level; moisture sensors; drying rack; drum light and lint filter sensors. The efficiency of a dryer depends on how good the washer's spin-dry cycle is and how fully the dryer is loaded.

Dryers start around $250 for a very basic model, while moderately priced (between $350-$600) offer convenience features such as cool down cycles, permanent press cycles, tumble only (no heat), express drying and temperature options. Models selling in excess of $600 are more likely to offer special features such as electronic or computerized touch controls. The most common brands for dryers include GE, Whirlpool, Maytag and Kenmore.

The Duet ® dryer keeps pace with your washer, cycle for cycle, while providing gentle care for even delicate fabrics. (featured above)
