If you are considering acting as general contractor instead of hiring one, there are some excellent resources to use. Three that we particularly like are:
- The Complete Guide to Contracting Your Home
- How to Plan, Subcontract and Build Your Dream House
- Be Your Own House Contractor
These books can be ordered through a local Barnes & Nobles or ordered online at Amazon.com.
Even if you decide to hire a general contractor to build your new home, it’s important that you have a good understanding of the building process. This will ensure that your final walk-through will be exactly what you envisioned while designing your home. One of the biggest obstacles to overcome is having all your products and supplies available at the time they are needed to keep the building schedule moving in a timely manner. | |

Building Your Own House
Anyone can act as their own general contractor and the major benefit is saving money. Many states do not have licensing requirements. You can check with your local building department to determine to see if you need to meet any special requirements. The home builder or general contractor is the person in charge of overseeing the entire project including hiring and scheduling of subcontractors and ordering all the material needed for construction.
The main thing to remember is that being the general contractor will require a great deal of time and effort. If you have not built a home before and don’t have a lot of knowledge of construction, and you do have a choice, carefully consider the pros and cons of each before committing to take on the responsibility. If it’s out of necessity that you are building your own house, seek all the help you can and read all that you can on the subject of building a home. As a member of our {Home Building Club} we will provide you bi-monthly information to help you coordinate the construction and complete your home in time and within budget. |
